বরিশাল কামান ও অতলতল
হিন্দু শাস্ত্রে বঙ্গোপসাগরে যে স্থানকে গঙ্গা দেবীর পাতাল প্রবেশ বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, সে স্থানকে অতলতল বলা হয়। এ স্থান বাকেরগঞ্জ-খুলনা জেলার দক্ষিণে রায়মঙ্গলে অবস্থিত। অতলতলের গভীরতা প্রায় ৭০০ ফুট এবং চারদিকের গভীরতা মাত্র ৫০ ফুট। উপকূল থেকে ১৫ মাইল দক্ষিণে অতলতল (Swatch of no ground) অবস্থিত। পূর্বে মে-জুন মাসে বরিশালের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম দিক থেকে কামানের শব্দের মতো আওয়াজ শোনা যেত এবং এ শব্দকে বরিশালের কামান বলা হতো (Gun of Barisal)। এ শব্দ খুব তীব্র হতো এবং একসাথে দু’তিন বার শব্দ হতো। বরিশাল কামান সম্পর্কে ডব্লিউ ডব্লিউ হান্টার লিখেছেন : “The only supernatural phenomenon in the district is a meteorological one, and is called Barisal Gun. It is a singular loud sound resembling the distant discharge of artillery, which is heard in the south of the district, and especially during the rains. A paper was read on the subject by Babu Gour Das Basak, before the Asiatic Sociaty, some seven years ago, but no one has yet come forward with a satisfactory explanation of the cause of this curious phenomenon. The statement, that it is caused by the action of the waves on the sea-shore, seems hardly tenable, as the sound is heard form inland, at such a distance from the coast as would preclude the possibility of this explanation; sometimes indeed as far north as Faridpur. No caverns or hot-springs are situated in Bakerganj.”
মি. হান্টার বরিশাল কামান- এর উৎস সম্পর্কে সঠিক কারণ নির্ণয় করতে পারেননি। মি. এইচ. বেভারিজ বলেছেন, অতল তল থেকে কামানের শব্দ সৃষ্টি হতে পারে। বর্তমানে এ শব্দ শোনা যায় না। এ শব্দ কেন শোনা যেত তার সঠিক তথ্য পাওয়া যায়নি। অনেক বলেন বরিশালে যে কামানের মতো শব্দ শোনা যেত তা অতলতলের স্রোতের শব্দ। আবার কেউ বলেন বায়ুমন্ডলের পরিবর্তনের জন্য এ শব্দ শোনা যায়। খুব সম্ভব জোয়ার-ভাটার সময় বিপরীতমুখী স্রোতের জন্য এ শব্দ শোনা যেত। বর্তমানে চর সৃষ্টির ফলে সাগরকূল অগভীর হওয়ায় স্রোতের বেগ হ্রাস পেয়েছে এবং সে জন্য এ শব্দ শোনা যায় না।
